SpiderScooby: An Origin Story

Hello there! Allow me to introduce myself. I am SpiderScooby. Some of you may know me from ScoobyFan.net, or seen my gameplay videos on YouTube. I’m just a legally blind gamer who likes nerdy shit (and Scooby-Doo). I decided to start this blog so I can get in the habit of writing again (and hopefully get ScoobyFan back up and running again). It’s been too long since I’ve done one of these, so I’m hoping this  will kick me in the nuts and get me going again.

So a little bit about me: i was just getting back into Scooby around 2007-2008. The 40th anniversary was around the corner. A new live-action movie had been announced (The Mystery Begins) as well as a new series (the awesome Mystery Incorporated). That led me to joining the forums over at ScoobyAddicts. That led me to create my own blog,  ScoobyFan.net. That’s when I came up with the name SpiderScooby. I needed a username, so I just combined my two favorite characters (Spider-man and Scooby-Doo) and SpiderScooby was born.

ScoobyFan.net, circa 2009.

Shortly after starting SF, some weirdo calling himself Scooby-Doom! asked if he could post comic reviews on the site. We started talking, things snowballed from there, and now he’s doing his own podcast, The Nerd Blitz w/ Doom & Fitz, which is somehow still going ten years later.

In 2016, I started a YouTube Channel, where I post no-commentary gameplay videos. Unfortunately around this time my creative side took a hit (depression can do a real number on you, as I’m sure some of you can relate), and SF ended up getting the short end of the stick because of it.

That brings us to today. Me and Doom did a Typecast about the upcoming live-action Scooby-Doo series on Netflix. That set off a spark in me that made me get off my ass and start writing.again. I’ve actually been wanting to start this blog for years, but you know. Fuck depression..

But what about the legally blind part? I was born with a rare condition called aniridia. That basically means I have no iris. Obviously I can see well enough to enjoy video games, though there are certain types of games I cannot do, games that have a lot of text or small icons. The original Fallout games, for example, are impossible for me to play. This is actually part of why I wanted to start this blog. Accessibility in gaming has become much more of a thing in recent years. Since my YT channel isn’t really focused on accessibility, my goal is to take a look at the accessibility settings in different games and see how they stack up. I will also be reviewing the games I play on the channel. So if those games have any kind of accessibility, I will mention them in my review.

What other types of reviews can you expect? I will be doing movie and tv reviews. I have a ton of ideas floating around my head that I’ve been wanting to do for years. Will those ideas manifest? We’ll see. If they don’t, or if I fail spectacularly, I can at least say I tried. I just hope my reviews won’t be too boring

So before this post becomes too rambley, let’s do some shout-outs. Of course, check out ScoobyFan net and the SpiderScooby YT Channel. Check out The Nerd Blitz w/ Doom & Fitz along with the Typecast me and Doom did. And finally,  check out ScoobyAddictsand ScoobySnax Blog, two great Scooby sites that are still going strong!
